Grandma Larpenter's Tea Ring

One of my favorite creations, made by Grandma Helen Larpenter, was her Tea Ring. When she made this delicious, sweet bread, the whole house smelled of yeast and made everyone's mouth water.

Grandma would usually make Tea Rings when we came to visit. I vividly remember one occasion when she was making her bread while we were there. I didn't realize that she'd made two of them and was heart broken when Uncle Emery walked in, handed grandma a $20.00 bill and walked out with the tea ring. I really didn't think highly of Uncle Emery at that moment but in looking back on that moment, I realize why he did that. Grandma and Grandpa were on a very fixed income, and I'm sure that having company put a financial strain on Grandma and Grandpa. It was Uncle Emery's way of helping. Who knows, Grandma may have called him! (grin)

I wish that someone had taken a photo of one of Grandma's Tea Rings, but as far as I know, it was never photographed. Here is a photo I found on the Internet, followed by Grandma's Recipe. Who knows, I may try it for Christmas!

Grandma's Tea Ring

Ingredients for bread:
1/4 cup warm water
1 pkg. yeast
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup butter, melted
3/4 cup scalded milk
1 tsp. vanilla
1 egg
flour

Dissolve yeast in warm water and set aside.
.
Scald milk and add sugar, butter, and vanilla. Mix well.
.
Beat one egg. Add yeast and milk mixture in large bowl. Add 2 cups of all-purpose flour and beat well. Remove from mixed and add 1 cup self-rising flour and mix by hand. Pour into a greasted container and let rise in a warm place.

Filling Ingredients:
1 stick oleo
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
cherries (topping)
.
Cream together and spread over dough the oleo, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Spring with 1 cup pecans and roll up, joining ends together to for a ring. Clip the outside edges with scissors, forming into a circle. Place cherries on top and bakes at 350 degrees until done.

Make a powdered sugar glaze from powdered sugar and water and drizzle on top of ring once it is out of the oven.
